After only 100 cars were produced Audi pulls the 'plug'
German car manufacturer Audi has decided to cease production of their all electric supercar, the R8 e-Tron.
It has only been 2 years since the initial R8 production model was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 2015. After a long and drawn out development process the car went on 'sale' for a whopping $1.1 million. Fewer than 100 were produced and although very beautiful inside and out, it was slow in comparison to other electric supercars.
One of the main problems also stemmed from the fact that Audi never told many people about it and you could not order it online nor did they make any attempt at marketing it, so it was a sort of insider secret!
Claiming a range of more than 450km / 279 miles, the e-tron was a great exhibition of Audi’s advances in battery density, with the company improving from 49kWh on its first electric platform to 92kWh while maintaining the same dimensions. Acceleration wasn’t a problem for the e-tron, either, as it could hit 100kmh in under 4 seconds. But as Audi said in Geneva, it always intended to use "the electrical high-performance sports car primarily as a mobile high-tech laboratory." None of that research and development effort is likely to go to waste, even if the production and sale of more e-trons is, for now at least, over and done with.
